People learn in all types of ways. As your teacher, it is important that I know how you learn, and as students it is important that you know how you learn. People possess many different types of intelligence. For instance, some of us can whiz through a math test in 10 minutes but take three hours to write a letter! How do we account for these differences in abilities? By looking to the types of intelligence we possess. Read on to learn a little bit about the eight types of intelligence, and then take the quiz (just click the picture to the right) to learn how you learn! Feel free to post a comment when you're done to let me know what type of learner you are, and if you think the quiz was accurate. For those of you who are interested, my top two intelligence types are musical and logical.
Language/Literacy
Language learners love everything about words! Hearing, saying and seeing words helps language learners to better understand concepts that they are trying to grasp. You language learners likely love to read and write, and take no time to write up an essay for English class. Since you guys love words, stories make sense to you and you love writing them as much as you do reading them. Try applying this to all your classes, and write yourself small stories in your notes. It may surprise you just how easy things may be to understand if you try this tip!
Spatial/Visual
Spatial learners love to see things. They need visualizations of concepts in order to really get them. If you are a visual learner, you probably excel in art class, and love to draw and doodle. Visual learners are lucky because there are millions of ways to apply your intelligence to all your classes. Try organizing your notes in pictures instead of traditional ways that only include text. Flow charts, diagrams, and doodles should fill the pages of your notebooks because this is what works for you!
Logic/Mathematical
Logical learners love things to make sense. They don't traditionally fare too well in the more creative disciplines, but tend to do very well in science and mathematics. If you're a logical learner, you likely want to understand how things work and are very good at puzzles. In addition, you logic learners are great critical thinkers. Work your logical ways into your study habits by keeping your things organized and in order (for instance, try making a chronological timeline in history class). This will help you to make better sense of your notes, and to really understand them.
Body/Kinesthetic
Body learners love to move, and learn well when doing it too! If your a body learner, you probably love and excel at sports, dancing, and anything else that gets you out of your chair and moving. Your best subject is probably gym class. Although it may seem tough to think of ways to apply kinesthetic intelligence to other classes, there's always a way. Although people who have high levels of body intelligence love to get up and move, there is more to it. They also like to fiddle with things and have tactile stimulation while learning. What does this mean to you? Bring a koosh or stress ball to my class and play around with it while you learn! You may be suprised how much better you learn if you do!
Musical/Auditory
Musical learners love to listen to anything that pleases their ear, which is usually a wide range of musical styles. They likely play an instrument (or many) and find that it comes very natural to them. There's tons of ways that musical learners can work their intelligence style into their learning. Try turning a list of proteins that you need to memorize for biology class into a jingle. You'll be amazed to see just how quickly and easily you can learn those 20 amino acids!
Intrapersonal/Self
Intrapersonal learners learn by means of personal reflection. You guys are great thinkers and probably have very deep personalities. Intrapersonal learners prefer individual study to group study, and learn best by simply reflecting on the day's lesson. You probably enjoy keeping a journal, and it is probably filled with profound thoughts! Try boosting your learning by keeping a small journal for each of your classes. By reflecting on what you learned in class on any given day, the material will begin to make more sense to you!
Interpersonal
Interpersonal learners are usually social butterflies, and feel very comfortable when they are in a group setting. If you're an interpersonal learner, you likely love group work and thrive in it. There are many ways to apply this learning style into your school work. Try forming study groups with other interpersonal learners. By discussing the material, your study group will find that they begin to better understand concepts.
Naturalist
Naturalist learners love the outdoors! They will seize any opportunity to take a walk, see a new landscape, or generally escape the four walls of a classroom and bring their learning to the great outdoors. Naturalist learners likely spend much time outdoors and find it very easy to recognize patterns in nature and the environment. You likely love environmental sciences almost as much as you love our beautiful planet! Try enhancing your study habits by bringing your work outside. Simply being in an outdoor environment will put your mind in a relaxed and open state. This will do wonders for your study habits!
