Come to Class Prepared
Not only should you come to class with all materials that you will need on a particular day, but you should also come mentally prepared. This means that you are expected to complete all readings that I ask you to do thoroughly and on time. Doing so will make a great difference in your grade! Much of what we do in this class requires active participation, and this active participation often requires adequate preparation.
Learn Small Bits Frequently
Every student has heard the age-old advice: don’t cram. This has never been truer for a course than it is for biology. There is a lot of material to cover in grade eleven biology, and the only way to stay on track is to keep up with material as we go over it in class.
Talk in my Class!
Participate, ask questions, talk to your friends. In order to succeed in a subject like biology, students need to be engaged and active with their learning. This means that instead of sitting there copying down notes and listening quietly, you should be asking myself, your peers, or the internet for extra advice (in that order).
Make Effective Notes
Instead of worrying about getting specifics down on paper, concern yourself with making notes that make sense to you. Personalize your notes by taking my quiz on multiple intelligence, and applying your learning type. For instance, if you are a visual learner try drawing diagrams and connecting concepts in them.
Flashcards
Try making flashcards for each unit we go through. When you do this, it is easy to separate what you know from what you need to know. Going through the your flashcards, and sorting them into piles that you understand and piles that you don’t allows you to sort out concepts and seek help for the ones that puzzle you.
Take Breaks
When you study for tests, make sure that you take some time to relax and walk away, especially if you find yourself frustrated with the material. Walking away from your studies for a few minutes will help you to refocus your thoughts and yourself upon your return. You will often come back to the problem, and see it in a new light. Your subconscious may have thought of a new way to look at the problem while you thought you were taking a break!
Think Outside of the Box
If you are having problems with a question or type of question, try relating it to something applicable to your life. This will help make the question relevant for you and might cause you to think of the question in a new light!
